WHO ARE WE
and
WHAT DO WE DO?

The Somerset-Pulaski County Humane Society was established as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation in June, 1989.  The Society was instrumental in the building of a new county animal shelter in the early 1990s.  After an inactive period of several years, the Society was revitalized in 2002 and has developed into a major force for the welfare of the animals within Pulaski County.

There have been new by-laws adopted, and a  Board of Directors now oversees the operation of the Society. Volunteers are the backbone of the organization, and it is their dedication that makes the Humane Society a potent force in the community.  There are currently more than 70 members, many of whom are active in various capacities.

The work of the Society is accomplished through a number of standing committees, which include the following:
  • FUNDRAISING - responsible for securing funds for the operation of the Society.
  • MEMBERSHIP - conducts an annual membership campaign during the month of March.
  • EDUCATION - educates the community regarding the work of the Society, the need for spaying and neutering pets, and other issues relative to the welfare of animals in Pulaski County.
  • LEGISLATION - works at all levels of government for the purpose of securing legislation consistent with the purpose of the Society.
  • PUBLIC RELATIONS - promotes the mission of the Society through the media, publishes a newsletter and keeps the residents of the County apprised of Society-sponsored programs.
  • SPAY/NEUTER - conducts monthly low-cost spay/neuter clinics in Pulaski County.
  • ADOPTION - secures permanent placement for foster animals and other adoptable pets.
  • FERAL CATS - strives to reduce the number of feral and free-roaming cats in the community
  • SPECIAL EVENTS - plans special events sponsored by the Society.

The Society is currently doing business as the Pulaski County Humane Society.  We are deeply concerned about the welfare of all domestic animals within the County, with the major emphasis on dogs and cats.  We believe that a pro-active spay/neuter program is the only logical humane solution to the severe over-population problem currently existing in the area.  We are committed to educating the community regarding the need for responsible pet ownership, which lies at the heart of the problem.

Through the united efforts of the entire community, we hope to significantly improve conditions for  all companion animals.  We look forward to the day when there will be no more homeless pets in Pulaski County.
